Sixth grade is a year of significant transition in many ways and sixth graders are taking what they have previously learned and applying it to more complex, independent learning. When a student is uncomfortable, they are not productive. Flexible seating allows them to choose an area to read and write besides their desk. Allowing flexible seating with bean bags and other types of floor seating gives the students a chance to get comfortable in a safe place of their choosing and read. Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up and work in small groups when we are having discussions and doing projects related to our novels. Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking which is what we are working towards with flexible seating. Students can use the flexible seating for paired reading, independent reading, and working on writing assignments related to their books and class novels. Classwork is more rigorous and greater responsibility is given as the year goes on. I want to provide a comfortable, safe, effective learning environment for each of my students. That is why we need your help!
