  • Book Clubs

    Funded Apr 11, 2023

Students gather in groups of 4 to 6 based on teacher assessment and are assigned pages to read based on a mutual agreement at the end of a book club session. The sessions are about 20 minute in time and students gather in a round table form to facilitate conversation. The meeting together is to discuss big and little observations and opinions of the book, how the characters relate to one another and ourselves, and the themes relate to everyday life. Students mark favorites lines to share and admire language. Students can engage in deeper conversation about social issues since the books are of high interest. This also promotes accountability as students are more likely to come prepared when they have the social connection to their peers.

The longterm outcome is that long after they leave my classroom students will see reading as not just something to be done for school or pleasure, but also something to create life long learning, which can also be a social activity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pertuz-Meza

  • Yoga And Mindfulness In The Classroom

    Funded Jun 25, 2019

I’m blessed to have been gifted the opportunity to deepen my yoga, mindfulness and meditation practice. I pride myself in my love of learning and teaching others. I will do just that with this opportunity. I believe the only way out is in and the true journey begins with self. This something my generation and past ones have failed to understand. However, this new generation is learning this now, and it’s up to the other generations to join them, since together we can move towards a new earth.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Pertuz-Meza

Educators need to show compassion, to help students build an emotional learning toolkit. Students need to grow, build loving relationship with others, and most importantly with themselves. I plan to do this by receiving two hundred hours of wellness training focused on yoga and meditation through Breathe For Change. A teacher for eighteen years in the New York City public school system, one thing I know for sure is asking a student, what happened, and not what’s wrong with you, can be the start of a trusting conversation. As a survivor of childhood trauma, the classroom has been the place I have gotten a do over. It’s where I have been able to teach little Connie alongside my students about love, empathy, emotional regulation, trust, mindset, positive affirmation, compassion, and self-awareness. All the tools needed to build a social emotional kit for my students, but also the ones I didn’t have. The ones I had not been taught, and the ones many of my students so desperately need. Breathe For Change is an acclaimed certification program, which empowers educators as experts in social-emotional learning, yoga, mindfulness, and community well-being. Once certificated, teachers gain ongoing access to resources and development on becoming leaders and holding school-wide wellness programs as leaders of change. The dates of this training will take place July 28, 2019 through August 16, 2019 in New York, New York from 8:00am to 7:00pm. Over the two hundred hours I will learn breath work, meditation techniques, yoga asanas, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, and how this work can be taught in the classroom in order to create a vibrant and compassionate learners.
