The majority of my students come from beautifully diverse, but low-income households. There is a lack of space and resources. During an assignment where I asked students to 'describe their bedroom' to work on adjectives, I learned that the majority of them share "bedroom" space with adults or other members of the family. Some of their living spaces double as bedrooms and it can be a challenge for them to have a quiet space that is all their own to relax and/or read. Our library is also long overdue for some updating as well. The children often complain about old, torn and repetitive books. My goal this year was to make my classroom as homey and calming as possible so that it doubles as a learning environment as well as a cozy and tranquil space for them. I've already done the first half of my goal through decor. This is my opportunity to take it a step further. I'd like them to be able to find a place of solitude in our classroom library by having both comfort as well as access to new and interesting books to read. I want them see what it means to curl up with a good book and find a new appreciation for reading. First and foremost, our classroom library is severely lacking in rich texts and reading materials. That is why I have requested different hardcover and paperback library sets. The classics library are essential books that should be a staple in any library children have access too. Book baggies can help ensure that the books return to the library for the next use. While pillows and floor seats will provide the level of comfort and ambiance needed to relax and read in the Cozy Corner.
