In kindergarten my students learn best when they are playing and learning to negotiate and engage with their peers. Throughout the day, we include hands-on activities and playing as much as we can, but during choice time, students are in charge! They get to choose which area they want to go to and lead their own exploration in a small group of peers. It allows them to take ownership over their learning and think about their own personal interests. This is often their favorite time of day when they get to form closer relationships with other students and explore a more open-ended type of learning int he classroom. They will use the dolls, rug, and cars to explore themes of family, friendship, and community. They will use the puzzle and ABC transformers to engage with letters in a hands-on way and learn more about the alphabets in both English and Spanish. They will use Lego bricks to creatively design and explore how different shapes can affect the way you can build certain structures. They will use animals to think more about life science and how living things survive and interact.
