My students are mainly Hispanic in descent, but they are extremely diverse in their abilities and backgrounds. My journalism and yearbook classes contain students that range from single moms, English Language Learners, poor families, rich families, AP and IB students. They attend a school of about 1400 students in a less affluent part of our city. I see journalism as a way to empower students, to show them how to be their own best advocates. Photojournalism is an important part of that process, especially for students that struggle with speaking and writing, like our English Language Learners.
