My students need books that they can relate to and that will give them access to the world around them. As we study subjects such as forces, ecosystems, life cycles, citizenship, navigation, and United States history, these materials will allow for greater schema building. These books were carefully chosen from the Notable Science Trade Books and Notable Social Studies Trade Books for 2018. My students need these books to help them explore the world while staying in their 3rd grade classroom. The people, places, and ideas that my students are exposed to in these books will inspire them to explore more of the world as they grow older. My 3rd graders are future researchers, scientists, inventors, and world leaders; they need these books to help show them all of the possibilities for their future. These books will help raise their interest in reading and their reading levels. The books will also help teach the science and social studies content that they will need to thrive in the world as they grow. In these books, my students will find real-life heroes that they can connect to and feel kinship with. They will also encounter people and places that they are different from and will have to re-evaluate their thinking. These books will both promote critical thinking in my students and offer them connections to their identity.
