  • Math Mistakes = Major Learning

    Funded Mar 1, 2023

These tables are a dream come true. Our students are able to work in smaller groups, show their work on the tables right in front of them, and make mistakes without feeling any pressure. At the start of every class, students participate in a brain practice called, "Retrieval" where they try to recall important information for class without looking at their notes. They do this on the tables to start off every class, and it is a great way for students to start engaging right away!

In my freshman seminar class, we do a lot of work with social and emotional learning. This includes mindfulness and meditation practices. My students use the tables to draw creative art that expresses their interests, moods and to calm their mind space.

Some of the best quotes from students:

"Miss, your room is the nicest room in the school"

"Miss, your room is like a club"

"Miss, I want a table like this at home"

"Miss, I wish all the classrooms have these tables"

"Miss, why are you so obsessed with being clean"

Thank you with all my heart! This is the second year that the students in room 110 have these tables, and I am making sure they will last for years to come. Sending so much appreciation and all the thankfulness in the world!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Zellers

  • Keep Our Tables Protected!

    Funded Jun 5, 2023

The table covers kept our tables safe all summer long! At the end of the school year, we put in this project to buy circular vinyl table clothes with elastic. The table clothes fit perfectly! This way, when the awesome custodial staff cleaned the school during the summer and moved the furniture, our tables stayed in perfect condition. It allowed us to start the school year off with tables in pristine condition. I appreciate your donation to allow for us to ensure that our furniture is able to stay for future generations of students.”

    With gratitude,

  • Creativity Flows in Geometry

    Funded Aug 20, 2018

Right now, our students are working on a Constructions Project. They have over 45 constructions to chose from and given how dedicated they are to their grades, they really appreciate the compasses. They also really love to make cool designs with the compasses as well. In a few weeks we will construct the center of gravity for various objects. Maybe we will inspired a few future engineers with these compasses.

A lot of the students who are in Geometry this year had me for algebra last year, so they remember how badly the old compasses worked they truly understand how lucky they are to get to use better compasses this year.

One other thing I'd like to highlight is about a particular student. Having these compasses has completely changed her outlook on math. She did very poorly in my class last year in Algebra, but has turned over a new leaf in geometry. Constructions come easy to her, and mainly it is because she is using good tools. She will wind up with 125% on this project (because she is going to use the extra credit opportunity) and this may be the difference between her passing the semester or not. We are very thankful for this.

I truly believe that the character students learn in my classroom is much more important than any "math" I can teach them. Students are learning that they must take care of their communities's resources. If they learn to be responsible this year, they will be responsible citizens in the future.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Zellers

My students really like to go above and beyond in classwork and projects. Any chance to be creative and artistic, and they go to infinity and beyond. Using the compasses and straightedges, the students will create a fabulous designs from scratch. I hope to see beautiful snow flakes, amazing octagons, and the development of some skills to maybe help students to become engineers and artists. There are so few opportunities for students to get hands on with their learning. It also is amazing because the students are doing the exact same techniques that Euclid did thousands of years ago. its pretty cool!
