Our school is in a high poverty area. 98% of our students are eligible for free lunches, so our entire school receives breakfast and lunch. My growing middle school students are frequently still hungry and don't have resources to bring their own snacks to school. I have been trying to provide a basket of fresh fruit but that is not sustainable long term due to cost and time. Our school does not have air conditioning and it is extremely hot! Frequent trips to the drinking fountain distract students from their work and don't provide adequate hydration throughout the day. By keeping students in class with their own water and snacks they will be better able to focus on learning.
