As a teacher, one of the biggest challenges I face is making sure that all of my students have what they need to fully participate in class daily. Most of my students come from a disadvantaged background, and this funding will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. Students who come to class prepared are more likely to engage and learn because they are focused on what matters: their learning!
To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the basic supplies that my students need to be successful. I will also purchase cleaning materials to ensure that I can welcome my students into a clean and safe learning space.
In addition to the basics, I have requested funding for miniature white boards. My Sophomores will be taking their English standardized tests in May, and it truly is never too early to prepare. The skills required on standardized tests (such as time management, following directions, and growth mindset) can be applied for success in any subject, career path, or problem-solving scenario. As a way of preparing for testing in May and practicing test-taking skills, I plan to engage students in strategic collaborative groups that will work through test questions together on the white boards. This will relieve stress around testing and create a culture of joy and healthy competition. The more confident students are in their ability to be successful on any task, the more likely they are to succeed.
Finally, I have requested funding for a small bookshelf, which will create for the beginnings of a small library. This will be used for independent reading when students complete classwork and assignments early.
