Students spend the most substantial part of their day at school and let's face it, school is often a place where the rooms are not only arranged similar, but they have similar desk, chairs, etc... I've found that by making my classroom an extension of home, a place that's comfortable and different from the norm, it's environment produces positive triggers among my students that create a sense of security and motivation to learn rather than going from class to class where commonplace surroundings become routine and more monotonous in nature vs. exciting and engaging. By adding a variety of seating options that my students consider to be "out of the box", they enter my classroom and seem to perk up with excitement, which transfers to being intrigued followed by engagement and ownership of their learning. My classroom is small, so I am very limited with my seating options. I believe the smaller, taller tables will fill some of my out of the way, small places and turn them into productive and, among my students, coveted learning areas. These unique spaces will be areas where they can come together in small groups or as partners and feel special, which I know from experience will transfer into productive interaction that will result in a meaningful learning experience. As an educator of today's youth, you have to use every edge you can possibly think of to reach your students. These "awesome" seating spaces will create a new sense of anticipation not only for coming to my classroom but for learning experiences as well.
