I believe that true education is bigger than the academic curriculum. It must nurture the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. I am also a lover of life-long learning and am embarking upon a life-changing certification. That said, I’ve decided to obtain my yoga certification, specializing in addressing behaviors and mindsets through trauma-informed yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practice. This research-based approach has proven effective in reducing suspension rates and improving student achievement outcomes. This certification costs about $2100 (for tuition and equipment), but the impact on the students receiving this gift will be priceless! With this knowledge, I plan to teach my students how to use meditation and yoga to self-regulate and avoid conflicts. In addition, the skills will reduce out of class time by offering an alternative to traditional discipline practices. After being certified, I plan to teach these strategies to students who struggle with behavior management. These students will receive targeted lessons in the areas of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making, that will be supported by the principles learned in the trauma-informed restorative yoga and mindfulness practices. In addition, I will also be able to train teachers to use these guiding principles and practices in their classrooms.
