  • It's "TIME" to Start Reading

    Funded Jun 26, 2011

On behalf of both myself and my students, I would like to thank you for your generous donation to our classroom. We have been using the Time for Kids magazines on a regular basis and the students are enjoying them immensely.

These magazines have helped expose students to a large amount of non-fiction text, something that we did not have regular access to in the past. So far, we have learned about ancient mummies, new bullying laws that relate to schools around the country, and exploring Mars. Students have been able to apply a variety of comprehension strategies and become more comfortable with reading non-fiction text. Thank you again for your donation! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ounsted

  • Reader's Workshop in Action!

    Funded Apr 26, 2011

On behalf of my students and myself, we would sincerely like to thank you for your donations to our classroom. As soon as my students saw the box that had been delivered, they couldn't wait to start reading the books inside! I have never seen so many students smiling and giddy at receiving books. As a teacher, this was truly a classroom experience that I won't forget! I could barely keep up with labeling the books, as the students had already created a "wait-list" to begin checking them out.

As mentioned above, we have already started to use these books. Almost every single one is now in the hands of one of my students. As the year comes to an end, students will be creating a book letter as part of the Reader's Workshop process. In this letter, students will write about the characters and plot of their book and how the theme impacted them. The books were received last week and I already have students that have finished one of these books and shared that it will be used for their book letter.

Again, from all of us, thank you for your generous donations. You have truly had a positive impact on my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ounsted

  • Voice Recordings to Increase Reading Skills

    Funded Oct 6, 2010

On behalf of all of my students, I would sincerely like to thank you for your donations to our classroom. With the voice recorders, my students are continually able to reflect upon their reading fluency. We are using these on a regular basis and my students constantly comment on how different they sound when listening to themselves read. Many have pointed out areas of improvement that they said they would have never noticed without these tools.

Even though these voice recorders would not be considered a basic need for my students to be successful, I know that they have already influenced the fluency skills of many of my students. With your generous donation, you truly have made a difference in the life of my students. For that, we will always be grateful!

Again, thank you for your donations from the bottom of our hearts. Please know that you have made a difference in the lives of my students. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ounsted

Reading is a life-long skill that all student should strive to be successful in. Unfortunately, many of my students struggle in this area. I currently teach language arts and social studies in a small town in which poverty is a large issue in our schools. Approximately 59% of our students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. We also have a large Hispanic population, many of which struggle in our reading classes due to language barriers. Regardless of economical status or ethnicity, all of our students have one thing in common: a love of technology. I would like to provide my students with the opportunity to use this love of technology to help further their education.
