My students range in age from 13 to 18. I teach special education classes(for students with emotional and learning disabilities) in a detention center (juvenile hall ). All bring their unique strengths and challenges to the classroom community. I am constantly amazed at their resilience despite all they have experienced. Most have seen someone murdered, have experienced abuse and violence, are habitually truant from school and come from chaotic households. Yet they shine when given positive attention and personalized academic intervention. I have worked with this population for 12 years and would not want to be anywhere else. Everyday I come to work, I learn something new from my students. I strive to help them gain the skills and confidence they need to transition out of here back to their old school or to some new placement. Getting to know each as an individual is extremely important
