What is needed most in the language arts department of my school is new literature for students that is current and engaging. Resources are stretched thin in our Title I school, and class text sets are highly valued. For students to become engaged in my class, they need to be excited about what they are reading, and new books can create this excitement. The books I would like to obtain will be used across all of my 6th grade classes to teach them narrative style and features. The beginning of our school year focuses on narrative writing style, so the book will be used to demonstrate narrative features, which the students will learn to identify, and then implement in their own work. The book is also current and relevant in teaching students about advocacy, which is taught later in the school year, so it is a valuable text to start the year with.
