What better way to explore rhythm than by making your own drum? How about experimenting with vibrations by using rubber bands, wax paper, and plastic combs? Students will be building various rhythm instruments and experimenting with materials to learn how vibrations create sound. This project will fill our school's new maker space with all of these materials and more. I can't wait to see the look on the faces of my third graders when they take these materials into their own hands to create their musical instrument. Little will our students know that by working collaboratively to make a musical instrument, they will also be fully immersed in STEM concepts. This is exactly what student-centered learning is all about!
