As an educator I feel it is evident to cover themes or power, gender roles, relationships, and feminism into our literature. With this, I always teach the historical context before beginning a novel while also bridging the gap to our more recent world events . A lot of the books available to the district that I work in, in my opinion, are outdated or in bad condition. Throughout my masters program I have been focusing on incorporating culture into education. Speaking on different topics such as women's rights, gender stereotypes, and how power can effect a government are some of the topics that are discussed in class. Speaking on these, students can make connections from different parts of the world and see how they can connect to their lives and the world around them. The novel "The Hate You Give" by Angie Thomas does just that. By covering Non-Fiction of the Harlem Renaissance, The Black Panther Party, Gang Culture, Police brutality, Tupac as an Activist, and Black Lives Matter; the novel is a great bridge into fiction that covers issues happening now that students can relate to. I truly believe that this can keep students engaged which then results in students learning more. For these reasons, for a donation.
