Our school district is located in a very rural area of Arkansas. Therefore, there are no homeless shelters. Families who lose housing due to financial hardship or natural disaster must double up with other members of their extended family or friends. The resources I chose for this project are directly related to enhancing student learning at this school district by providing needed supplies for hygiene for our homeless students and for providing education to staff about students who live in homeless and poverty. These students need supplies such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, body wash, and deodorant to ensure that their hygiene needs are met. The majority of the faculty and staff do not have the background to understand how homelessness affects, not only the social and emotional needs of the child, but also the academic needs of children living in homelessness. Since the majority of our homeless students are living doubled up with other families, our project is focusing on providing necessities related to hygiene. It is our belief that it is essential for students to have the hygiene supplies to maintain dental health and cleanliness. When students do not have the necessary supplies needed to maintain basic dental hygiene and general cleanliness their self-esteem and motivation is adversely affected. Positive self-esteem and personal motivation is essential for academic success. If our project can provide these needed items to enhance students success, the academic gaps can be closed and our homeless students have a better chance of reaching their academic, personal, social, and, eventually, career goals. Our project will also focus on providing education to faculty and staff through professional development and education about the special social, emotional, and academic needs of students living in homelessness.
