I like to gather my students on the carpet for mini lessons in both reading and math. We sit is an assigned spot/color block daily. This allow the students to feel comfortable and confident because they know where to go. Once they have "A Seat of Their Own" there is not limit to their learning. They even have a shoulder buddy who they are able to "buddy buzz" with when I ask them questions. This allow for cooperative learning which is a life long skill. This colorful and comfortable meeting area/rug fosters a supportive community in our classroom. This colorful meeting area will bring a community of learners together, the place where the class has conversations, learns to listen to one another and respect each other’s perspectives. They learn to consider each other’s work, and problem solve together. Kids sit together at the meeting area, usually next to a partner that they can turn and talk to. For whole class conversations, they can easily sit in a circle so that they can make eye contact and listen more actively to one another in a group. Being physically closer fosters more active listening, more engagement, and more empathy for one another as they share ideas, hold conversations, and work together as a whole group. The meeting area is more productive, engaging, and more effective for whole class instruction.
