Currently, I teach in a resource room in Chicago Public Schools. I have 9 students on my case load who are in my room for a little over half the day. The range of abilities levels, both academic, social and emotional is extremely broad. All of my "boys" have developmental delays. I also have students with emotional disorders, speech language impairments and autism. Many of my students have families who immigrated here from Mexico and South America. All of them, with the exception of one or two, are at the poverty level and have little exposure to printed English at home. They come from extremely loving families that want their children to do well. Because my students have learning disabilities, they are not learning from the standard "pencil and paper" method like the other students and need more activities that stimulate various learning modalities. My "boys" are fantastic, energetic, spunky and curious 5 year olds that are ready to learn, but need more hands on activities!
