Dictionaries for Lifelong Learners
Funded Aug 20, 2018When I decided I wanted to be a teacher I was only a child. When I got my first teaching job I just knew that I had found my purpose in life. Everyday I look forward to to going to work and seeing my students. Working at a Title I school has been extremely eye opening. Many of my kids are students when they are at school and become parents when they go home and many deal with situations I could never fathom at their age.
I believe all bright futures begin with a thirst for knowledge and a thirst for wanting to be better, but to be better one must be equipped with the proper materials. One of those materials include an extended vocabulary and knowing when to use that vocabulary.
My students often ask me if I always speak properly, even outside of school and as hilarious as this question is, it shows that they notice when someone has developed an expanded vocabulary and is able to deliver content in a way that makes them want to know more.
The Mariam-Webster's Dictionaries and Thesaurus have provided my students with an opportunity to be responsible for their own knowledge and the work it takes to acquire such knowledge. They use the dictionaries on a daily basis and get so excited when they learn a new word and use it properly. The dictionaries have made an enormous impact in my classroom and allowed my students to use vocabulary beyond social and text language.”
With gratitude,
