  • Distance Learning? No Problem!

    Funded Jun 5, 2020

Thank you all, once again, for your support! With your donations we were able to make learning kits for 10 students! Each learning kit included: 6 notebooks (math, reading, science, social science, individualized educational plan goals, and social emotional learning), 6 folders, a large binder, a pencil case, crayons, expo markers, white boards, dry eraser, ruler, pens, pencils, scissors, reading and social emotional learning manipulatives! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!

This time is tough for our kids. They are forced to learn at home, they cannot physically see their friends, their devices do not always work, they need to adapt to virtual learning, which can be frustrating. However, my students are able to have a more normalized 5th grade experience. They are able to journal, take notes, create artistic pieces, be organized, participate in hands on learning, ultimately grow.

Students and parents have both expressed their gratitude. Here are some things I have heard:

Student: "I am going to take care of my materials"

Teacher: "Please get our your notebook and a pencil"

Student: "Ms. Olson! We all have notebooks, I am going to start taking notes on page one so I don't waste it"

Parent: "Thank you for going above and beyond for my child"

Student: "You gave us so much stuff, Ms. Olson! Its going to help me learn!"

I was even greeted with a bouquet of flowers!

Although things were said to me, I say them to you because they would have never expressed these feelings if it weren't for you! So I say to you, thank YOU for "going above and beyond" for our children.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Olson

Thank you again SO much for your donations you gave to support this project! We were able to hand deliver 7 boxes of goods to my students homes this past Saturday. Take a look at the photos to see what each box contained! You provided an opportunity for me to see my students when we haven't seen each other since March. Not only that, you gave them comfort, put smiles on their faces, and spread joy in the community of South Shore. For that I am forever grateful. These boxes contained healthy snacks, basic household items, personal care goods, and a friendly letter to provide some sort of comfort in these trying times.

As I mentioned before, my students and I have not seen each other since March! That is the longest many of them have gone without a personal face-to-face interactions with their teachers. Many of my students were SO surprised to see me and to receive a small gift from others they don't know. I was greeted with bear hugs (I know I know 6 feet! I just couldn't resist) and smiles that stretched from ear to ear. I heard things like "thank you so much", "I miss you!", and "I love you". I received messages from parents that said things like "Thank you so much we really appreciate it" and "We love everything in this box...omg thank you". I was able to deliver the boxes with a friend where we stayed for a while in their brand new home. Although students and parents thanked me...this was NOT my doing. Joy spread on this day because of YOU! I cannot thank you enough.

Next up, we will begin working on delivering school supplies and hands-on manipulatives and activities for students to use at home while virtually learning. Stay tuned!

    YOU are amazing!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Olson

  • Need a Reliable Printer and Laptop for Personalized Learning!

    Funded Jul 25, 2018

A year ago, you donated money to my cause to give our classroom an IPad. With this, we were able to manage student behavior and give our positive student behavior incentives using Classroom DOJO, students were able to use the device in their small groups, it provided visual learning, and enhanced student growth.

Students LOVED this device. They were most excited when they were able to use it to act as the teacher and give out points for students positive behaviors. THEY LOVED IT!

One student who came to our school with a behavior plan, used this tool to monitor his own behavior. His behaviors improved drastically because of this. We could not have done this without you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Olson

  • Tech Savvy

    Funded Dec 1, 2018

Thank you so much for your contribution! I really appreciate it! I can’t wait to show you pictures of my students getting use out of this device! Not only is it going to make progress monitoring so much easier, It is also going to make learning so much fun! Thank you again! It means a lot.”

    With gratitude,

Teaching Diverse Learning students, in a classroom with 18 students, with limited access to resources, especially technology, is hindering students abilities to learn at a fast pace. This is causing the gap to remain the same or even grow. Diverse learning students need to have access to small groups and multiple modes of representation. With a classroom of students who are learning from a range of Kindergarten to 3rd Grade, small groups are essential. It is important for students to be able to work independently during small group time so that students who are working in their guided group can receive full attention and support. Many of my students are unable to independently read or write. That is why technology is so important. By using an iPad during small group instruction, students will have access to programs that can help build foundational skills, such as, phonics and phonemic awareness, audio books and audio comprehension questions, and voice to text programs to help build comprehension skills and writing skills. It will also give them access to programs that will help build their math skills by providing access to pictorial representations, numerical representations, and even manipulate objects on the screen to help increase their foundational math skills. I have a few students that have been diagnosed with Autism. The cover for the iPad will help keep it safe so that our classroom can benefit for using this resource for many years. This would be an incredible addition to our classroom that can improve students ability to learn and shrink the gap!
