Being from a low income community, many of my students haven’t had much access to books and literature in the early years of their life. Many of them do not have personal books at home. My goal is to provide my students with high interest books that are academically challenging but also fully engaging. It is critical to my students' long-term success that they are strong readers and find a value in literature! If I provide my students with literary classics, they are often uninterested and unable to access the content with much success. Still, my students love to read about superheroes and villains, archetypes that are in many great works of literature. All of my students, and my particularly struggling readers, love to read comic books because the pictures and visuals are less intimidating than a typical book. As a teacher it is my job to provide scaffolds that can help my students to challenge themselves, but still feel successful in doing so. Graphic novels provide this type of scaffold perfectly! They make reading fun for the kids, many of whom begin to read more for enjoyment! The Odyssey by Gareth Hinds has a Lexile level of GN840L. While this is probably gibberish to most people, it means that it is in the perfect range for kids in 6th grade, and we need a class set of this book. It will challenge my students, but they will be able to access the content and enjoy reading it.
