  • 15 Minutes to College Readiness

    Funded May 6, 2012

I am so honored and touched at the impact of your gift. As you know, college is such an important aspect of being successful in today's generation. For many of my students, it seems like such an impossible feat. Every day, I am reminding them of the importance of college. Your donation helped, for they are reading and believing in themselves as college capable.

Once again, thank you so much for your generous donation. On behalf of my students, we appreciate it.

  • These Guys Needs Books!

    Funded Dec 5, 2011

I am so honored and touched at the impact of your gift. Every day, my students have been using your donation of books. As you know, literacy is probably one of the most important skills a student can possess. The problem is, it's such a hard skill to attain; the best way to achieve it is to read, which is why the books you donated are so helpful, for they are interesting to my students.

Once again, thank you so much for your generous donation. On behalf of my students, we appreciate it.

  • From Tyrell to Bronxwood

    Funded Dec 30, 2011

First, let me apologize for not being able to have photos of my students. I teach in a school located within the prison; we are not allowed to take photos of students. I have included photos of some of the wonderful books and the work that the students submitted.

You need to know that my students love the books. Especially Bronxwood, which is the second part of Tyrell. I have students who are not even in a school wing come and ask if they can borrow a book.

As I'm sure you realize, literacy is such an important skill to possess in today's world, and so many of my students lack this skill. Your generous donation has brought my students one step closer to being literate individuals. Thank you for that.

Please know that I am doing my best to take care of the resources that you so generously purchased for my classroom. Thank you so much for believing in my students, and for providing wonderful books to our classroom. ”

  • Books to Inspire African American Students to Read

    Funded Mar 30, 2010

I am writing to say thank you for the books you so generously donated to my classroom. They were an instant hit, and I even had students from other classes asking if they could borrow the books.

Specifically, we used the books you so generously donated to complete a book report at the end of the year. Each student wrote a book report on one book that they enjoyed, and when they were finished I took a picture of them with the book. From there, I laminated the reports with the student's pictures and plan on using them next year when my students ask my what books are good for self selected reading. My goal in this assignment is to create a community of readers who can recommend books to each other.

I also used the books this summer in my Keep Kids Learning program. Many of the students asked if they could take the books home to keep reading them, so I really consider that a success!

Once again, thank you for your generous donation. I plan on using these books for a long time. Thank you. ”

  • Let's Bring Words to the Wall

    Funded Mar 12, 2010

I would like to thank you for your generosity in donating the sentence strips, laminator, and laminating pouches to my classroom. We have been using them in learning our vocabulary, and also in creating a word wall. Our school has been focusing on prefixes, suffixes, and root words for the last couple months and your generosity helped us accomplish our goal!

In addition, the laminator has been a great organization tool for my general sanity as a teacher. For instance, I run a club once a week, and the club meets during lunch periods. The laminator was helpful in making permanent passes for the students so that I was not faced every week with writing a dozen passes. I have also used it to laminate stencil letters.

I have also used the laminator as a means of publishing final student papers. The students enjoy the process of being told "it's done" and laminating the final work. I continue to use the sentence strips on a weekly basis as we encounter new words.

Once again, I want to thank you for your generosity. On behalf of my class, I am very appreciative and promise that we will take good care of these resources.

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Boggs

  • Help Me Bring The Greek Gods Into My Class

    Funded Feb 19, 2010

We have finished reading The Odyssey in my class, and we just recently finished using the greek myth books that you so generously donated to my classroom. The students loved reading the myths! They actually enjoyed those books better than The Odyssey, which they really did not enjoy reading as much as they enjoyed watching (the 1987 movie version). However, I think they appreciated the story more after they read some of the myths. I used the books as an opening to my 90 minute classes. After we completed our daily oral language lesson (a grammar sentence that the students have to edit), we would read one myth a day. Usually, I would read the myths to the students and they would follow along. Sometimes, though, I would have them break into groups and partner read.

As I am sure you agree, the ability to read is so important in today's society. It was amazing to me how, after only a couple minutes into a myth, the students would be enthralled with the entire story. In fact, I was very proud that a couple times a student would raise his or her hand and ask for clarification about one of the stories. For instance, Vondeze (we're not supposed to have favorites, but Vondeze is one of my favorites because he really got into the whole mythology unit) was very interested in the demi-gods an how they came into existence.

The money you spent on my classroom helped make these wonderful teachable moments! On behalf of my class, I would like to say thank you. I am so excited about teaching The Odyssey next year, for I am going to use these book the day we begin the unit. Once again, thank you so much for your generosity.

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Boggs

  • Ten Pin

    Funded Dec 30, 2009

On behalf of Ms. M, I am writing to tell you how much our students appreciated your generous donation. Sadly, Ms. M passed away a couple months ago, and her passing was a complete shock to our entire school. She is missed and remembered every day.

We used your generous donation for our Young Men Incorporated Program, which seeks to instill positive attributes in all of our male students. We do this by spending time with them out of school, mentoring them on positive behaviors, and believing in them when it seems like no one else does.

Many of these young-men-incorporated students were also going to be on Ms. M's bowling team. The students went on the bowling trip last month, and I can honestly tell you that the students had an awesome time bowling and spending time with our teachers. While at the bowling alley, the teachers modeled positive behavior, and the teachers talked with the students about college (while on the bus). We as a school feel that the modeling of positive behavior, the one to one mentoring to our students, and the discussions about college provide an essential support system that is pivotal to the students we serve, for, as I am sure you are aware, we are the only source of structure for many of our students.

Once again, thank you for your generous donation. Ms. M was such a big fan of donors choose, and with such generous people as yourselves, it's easy to see why. ”

  • Bowl Me Over!

    Funded Aug 4, 2009

Bowling is a wonderful sport for students anywhere; they can continue to bowl well into adulthood. However, it is expensive. To be truly competitive you cannot bowl with house balls, and now we won't have too.

The boys were so excited when I told them they would each receive a ball, shoes and a bag. They can now practice without having to worry about the expense of a shoe rental. This makes a big difference to them.

Last year we won our section in bowling. We took first place over teams where every bowler had their own ball. We bowled with house balls. These young men have the potential to continue bowling in college and perhaps will, especially now that they can practice on their own with their own ball. It makes all the difference in the world.

We are eternally thankful to you!”

  • You are Bowling us Over With Generosity!

    Funded Dec 7, 2009

I cannot express enough the importance of this donation to our bowling team. Without your generosity we would not be able to compete.

We need to practice to improve. I am so thankful to you for funding our practices. I do not believe in encouraging young men and women to "half" do anything. If you are going to bowl; bowl! Do the best you can. Practice, try hard and succeed. It is a recipe for success. We may have been able to attend our competitions, but without having practiced, what is the point?

Bowling is a lot of fun. It is a sport these young men and women can play well into adulthood. It is also something for the students to do after school. We need to fill the days and evenings of our youth with positive and enjoyable experiences. The bowling alley is a much preferred alternative to the streets. Thank you for your generosity.

  • What Does Patinar Mean?

    Funded Nov 2, 2009

Our dictionaries have arrived! Thank you. They are a wonderful addition to our classroom. It will enhance my students' ability to read authentic Spanish text. Right now we are reading some Mexican legends. They are really enjoyable. I think the students will be able to do a little more independent reading now that we have the dictionaries. I really appreciate them very much. Thank you again.

Donors choose has brought so many wonderful things into my classroom. I cannot begin to tell you how thankful I am to you.”
