Struggling readers require specialized and individualized instruction. When I meet with small reading groups I often have to work individually with a student from that group. The other two students will be able to practice specific skills in which they have demonstrated the need for extra support. We would access free programs such as Teach Your Monster to Read as well as appropriate Google apps that will provide students with focused support and the differentiation that they need. Further it will ensure optimal engagement while I work one-to-one with another student on skills and/or assessment. A hidden benefit would be the building of technological skills, a true need for students since our technology instructor position was eliminated due to budget cuts.
