How do you take an average classroom and transform it to an innovative and project-based learning environment? Involve the students!
My project proposal is all about how food gets "From Farm to Table", where students will learn about the process, production, and products of farming crops and livestock all while learning essential academic skills! We will learn about the process of heathy food choices and how they get from farms, grocery stores, and eventually to our own kitchen! The students will be using real-world, project-based learning strategies to research, plant, grow, and maintain vegetables in their own container gardens grown by the students. We will be incorporating a lifecycle unit on chickens where we will be raising our own chickens in our classroom using an incubator.
We will use cross curricular standards as we incorporate science, research, technology, mathematics, social studies, and reading skills. This project will allow students to truly be hands on and involved as they use their mind and creativity as individuals and as a group. Some examples of how the materials will be used are below!
The iPad is essential for our research and portable data/observations as we will be outdoors for most of my lessons. The Luna projection camera will be used to display our data on the promethium board as well as magnify seeds/plants for a better view. The scale will be used to weigh our food we grow. Seeds and herb kits will be used to help us have an up close view on a plant's lifecycle. This is a project that goes beyond simple gardening, it allows the students to use the knowledge they have learned in the classroom and apply it to real-world scenarios. It truly hits the TN state standards across the board and will change the learning environment altogether.
