We are requesting Spanish language books, so that students and families with little English can engage in reading. The goal of this project is to begin to build a library of Authentic Spanish language texts in my classroom. Authentic texts are those that are written in Spanish by Hispanic authors from around the world. Many Spanish language texts are translated from English, which does not allow students to explore the depth of Hispanic literature. These texts will allow Newcomers and Spanish-speaking families to share the multitude of benefits that daily reading provides. Research shows that literacy skills built in a student's native language transfer to his or her second language. With the addition of these texts, I hope to celebrate students native language, encourage literacy at home, and develop strong bi-literate, bilingual students.
