Using Knitting to Help Our Community and Learn Fiber Arts
Funded Feb 2, 2024I cannot thank you enough for your donation of knitting looms to my classroom. They have been a huge success. When I first started teaching this elective, I quickly realized that trying to teach 20 students how to knit with standard knitting needles was an all but impossible endeavor. All of that changed once I had those knitting looms and a goal of donating hats to babies. My students were beyond excited and took to using the knitting looms almost immediately. Most students made 2 hats (one small, and one slightly larger). These students included some who struggled in other classes academically, or other students who often have a hard time sitting still. Some were so impassioned that they would be knocking at my door asking if they could use their study hall to come knit. Some bought looms to use at home and then came to class with hats to donate that they had made on their own time. It was awesome to see these students become class leaders and help other students still getting the hang of it!
Just last week, I sent our first ever batch of hats to Niswonger Children's Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee. While I had hoped to send our hats to local hospitals, I'm also still learning! In the fall, I plan to develop some local connections earlier in the semester so that I can plan out which hospitals are accepting donations. I would love to grow the program now that I know how excited our students are about it and how accessible knitting is to them! Thanks to you and your generous donation, I will be able to do so. The knitting looms you helped to purchase will keep new students knitting all next year too!
It takes a village to raise and educate our kids! Thank you for being a part of this one. You are so appreciated!!”
