Yvone Enoch and James Lyke said, “The good teacher…. knows that the best learning environment is always student-centered, never teacher-centered.” But in the 21st century classroom, what are the perfect ingredients needed to create a student-centered classroom so that students are able to be creative, collaborative and achieve at high levels academically? Teachers may need to step outside of their comfort zone to allow students to thrive. My students will be more engaged, more motivated, and more collaborative in my classroom that utilizes flexible seating. My project is designed to increase my students' level of reading and classroom engagement and build independent reading stamina. Students need to enjoy what they are reading, but in order to maintain focus when reading and during class time, they need to be comfortable when doing it. Students will be able to use the balance balls and wobbles stools not only in the reading corner but all throughout the classroom. The wobble stools and balance balls will create a stimulating environment that will help ALL children learn. Through a reading engagement inventory, we will track our initial reading stamina, and then once our classroom is transformed through this project, we will continually monitor each student's improvement in reading engagement and independent reading stamina.
