I teach 1st grade at a school in Oklahoma City, OK. Our school is classified as "Title 1" meaning that all of the students receive free or reduced priced breakfast/lunch. Most of my students families are classified as below the poverty line. Food insecurity is a challenge that many of my students face every day, and some only eat while they are at school.
We eat lunch every day at 10:45, and many of my students are hungry by the time they return from recess/specials. They tell me all the time, "Ms. Mouser I'm hungry." and some have even told me, "I don't have any food at home." We have established a snack time at 12:40 every day, but many students do not have the resources to bring a snack for themselves from home. I would like to be able to provide a snack for my students every day, which is why I'm requesting a range of snacks in this project.
Hunger affects student learning. When a child is hungry they cannot focus on the material that they are attempting to learn. My goal as an educator is to break the cycle of poverty with my students, but it would greatly help me if my students could be ready to learn - including not facing hunger in my classroom.
Your contribution to my project will help change young lives - not just providing a snack for a student in need, but allowing them to focus on learning in my classroom instead of their hunger - and therefore allowing them to be successful in the 1st grade where we are learning how to read, write, count to 100, tell time, and be a good citizen among other foundations of learning for each grade here on out.
Thank you for helping my students learn. Your donation will change lives.
