My students are adolescents who come from hard places and therefore require literacy inspiration to come into their lives from external sources. As a lover of reading and the school literacy coach, it is my mission to instill a sacred love of reading in my scholars. These eleven, twelve and thirteen year old people live stressful and often traumatic home life. When they talk about the impossible journeys and heroic acts that occur in movies and on TV, their eyes light up while they become the storytellers recounting details that stand out to them. These lights will be turned on and fires lit within these scholars when I can provide them with highly imaginative and engaging texts such as the Mythology and Fantasy book collections. Provoking imagination to leverage scholars' reading abilities from below grade level to grade level and beyond is imperative for their futures as literate citizens. As a start up middle school, my colleagues and I depend on connecting scholars with interesting content in order to stoke their capacities to become lifelong readers and learners. In order to build personal connections with reading and writing, my scholars will effectively absorb the creativity of the human imagination through these collections of books.
