  • Listening for Learning!

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

You definitely contributed to the benefits of a listening center in our classroom!

Students are now having the wonderful opportunity to hear their favorite books read aloud again and again. The more they listen, the greater they are learning new vocabulary words from your donated audio library. Now, Students chant words like "peddler" from Caps for Sale , "tentacles" from The Pout Pout Fish, or even "misbehave" from the book Miss Nelson is Missing- you get the idea. Alas, they get right to drawing and responding , followed with some talking about their favorite part with each other.

Reading now looks like fun ! The listening center is set up so that 2 children listen to the same book at the same time. Unfortunately, there is only space for a table, a CD player , and 2 chairs, but it doesn't matter because you can for sure see and hear the love of books and reading that has been installed in these students. Most of the time , the students listen to the books over and over with smiles on their faces. Students for sure chime in the Sing-Along Read-Along Classics such as, There was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly or The Wheels on the Bus. You can bet conversations about the books and repeated parts of the stories go on and on.

The special education students in our ICT class are especially enjoying the new books at the listening center. These books are exposing them to patterns, intonation, expressions, different accents & dialects. It's fantastic to observe these particular students to be able to build on their vocabulary and oral fluency . Hearing a story multiple times also has had a significant impact on their word recognition, fluency and comprehension. Most of the these students have an IEP for Speech therapy. Such a joy to observe these readers focusing , building reading fluency , and improving student confidence, which translates to success!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ellinikos

  • Carpet for Learning

    Funded Aug 16, 2018

Thank you all so much for taking part in the funding of my very first Donor's Choose project! I am in awe of how generous everyone has been. Your contribution has lit up the lives of my students! I am beyond excited about our new classroom rug . We are now able to engage in read alouds, shared writing experiences, and group lessons all in the comfort of our own individual spots on our new classroom rug.

Thank you so much once again for funding my project and helping my students. Your contribution to my classroom means so much to me and to each of them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ellinikos

Rugs are an essential component of a Kindergarten classroom! Not only do they provide an inviting environment, but they also assist in keeping students focused, and helps to organize classroom activities or centers, and our morning meetings. This new carpet would make the classroom even more inviting and be a welcoming space for my students. Additionally, the spots on the rug will help my students to manage their own space. It will be a visual reminder of where they should be during our lessons as well as where to keep the things they bring to the whole group, like their writing folders, whiteboards, and pencils.
