In our current ELA curriculum, the first unit focuses on indigenous peoples, however, the assigned text is written by an 'observer' of these people. After researching texts written by indigenous authors that connect with historical events and focus on identity and perspective-taking I found "In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse" by Joseph M. Marshall III. Joseph M. Marshall III is an indigenous author and in his book, the narrator is an 11 year old boy (much like our students in this fifth grade class). Our class, made up of Black and brown budding activists and leaders, needs this book for its relevancy and its historical ties. So often, when we read about indigenous peoples in school it is not from a current, native perspective. This book does everything and more! Help us get it in our classroom!
