Give Harlem Students Quality Books and Affirmation

Funded Aug 21, 2019

The students have loved our new classroom books, so much! We have read aloud at the end of each day, and the kids are so eager to read our new ones. Some of their favorites have been How to Read a Book and I am Enough. We've been learning how illustrations in a text help to carry the main idea, so students enjoyed the beautiful and colorful pictures.

We read the book Dreamers on our Hispanic Heritage Celebration day. Students loved the poetic writing and we had a wonderful discussion about who Dreamers are and how we can support Dreamers. Students related with the characters because many of them are immigrants and Dreamers, too.

Every day, we have independent reading, and students are always asking to borrow one of these new books from our library. They love the illustrations and the stories with characters that look like them! When I was reading aloud Princess Hair, my student raised my hand and said "she has brown skin, just like me!" It was so exciting to be able to give my students books that represent them.

Thank you so much for helping me reach this goal, and helping my students to be excited about reading!”

With gratitude,

Ms. Moffat
