We need more than sports for middle school students. More and more teens are displaying a lack in confidence and socially anxiety. Many of those who are joining the anime club are shy and withdrawn around the general school population, but these children are hard workers in school, kind, love to draw manga characters, and have a fascination with Japanese animation. When we talk about anime, their faces light up, and they become quite talkative with me. They proudly show off their drawings. My former students have asked me to form a club for them after school, and we have almost 40 students ranging from 5th to 8th graders. These materials will support our new club.
With these manga books and art supplies, you help these students build confidence by talking and sharing with their peers, drawing and developing their talents, and having a safe place to be themselves. The manga novels will be used for students to enjoy reading and share in discussions. We will use them for comparing and contrasting, relate to the characters, and appreciate Japanese Culture. They can be used as examples to write their own manga stories. The drawing books and colored pencils can help students who want to learn how to draw manga characters or improve their drawing techniques skills. Many activities will be tied to favorite anime shows. The children can make character masks for cosplay or use the Perler beads to build characters. We will tie in Japanese crafts with the origami.
With your help, I will have needed materials to support this new, exciting club. Many shy teens will blossom, by building their creativity and confidence, while positively expressing themselves.
