  • Map Puzzles to Find Our Place in the World!

    Funded Apr 3, 2023

The students were a bit "puzzled" when we received our Donors Choose box in the mail. I explained that we were taking a break from our Model United Nations simulations to work on geography and maps. I had assigned some computer-based studying websites to help them prepare for our map test but when they saw the puzzles most students opted to use the more tactile method instead. They reported that they preferred to use the puzzles to help them learn the location of the countries in each continent. I later tested them each week on a different continent of the world and they performed very well as a result of using the puzzles.

I plan to use the same method again this year with my new group of Model United Nations class and hope I will get similar results. Hopefully in a few years they will still remember many of the nations of the world and will be able to locate Ukraine on a world map.

Thank you again for your generous assistance.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kugler

  • Rock Out with the Founding Fathers!

    Funded Dec 23, 2010

Thank you very much for the LCD projector. I have been using it with my personal laptop and it has improved my class atmosphere. I have created various PowerPoint presentations incorporating primary documents, political cartoons and maps. We also got to see excerpts from such films as Cinderella Man during our unit on the Great Depression and parts of the New York documentary segment on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. They also finally saw the music video of the Founding Fathers singing about the Declaration of Independence!

New York City is anticipating budget cuts next year and supplies and technology will probably take a big hit in our funding. I am very grateful that I secured my own projector so that I may continue using a multimedia approach to my teaching.

Thank you again for the materials that capture student interest and hopefully inspire some future historians (or video directors!).”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kugler

I work in a high school in New York with a variety of students ranging from Special Education, English Language Learners to Honor Students. My classes are in 11th grade which is the U.S. History curriculum. We are a Title I school but our federal funding does not provide for individual teachers to get their hands on the latest technology for the classroom. Some classrooms have SmartBoards (projectors with attached computers) but approximately 75% of the classrooms have only chalkboards or whiteboards. Some teachers have purchased projectors which they attach to their own laptops so that they are able to simulate the SmartBoard function.
