Playing to Learn and Learning to Play
Funded Sep 6, 2023Thank you so much for your contribution to my classroom. The students love the new space. The sensory tables have definitely been the main attraction, but there is something for every student. I have kiddos who love art, and at least once a class, they gravitate to the easel. I have other kiddos who can spend the entire class cooking a meal in the home center. And one student in particular who is in love with books. Her favorite spot is now the literacy center.
Although my 1-3 year olds do not have the language to say how much they enjoy the space, you can see it through their play. They are enjoying themselves so much that they have a hard time transitioning away from free play and into our other activities. As an infant/toddler teacher, it is a good problem to have!
Thank you again for all you support!”

Funded Mar 30, 2023Thank you so much for donating to my project "Learning to Love Literacy." When I originally started this project, I had the idea of working with my families on building a literacy routine with their children. Little did I know how popular my reading activities would become.
I began with our first book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" I asked the families to read the book once a day with their child for a week. With multiple copies of the book, I was able to lend some families a copy. Others, I connected with their local libraries to borrow the book. I also provided families with YouTube links to read aloud versions of the book in ASL, ASL and English, and ASL and Spanish. In home and group sessions, I worked with families on learning the ASL signs for the book. As the parents began reading regularly at home, the children quickly fell in love with the book. In addition, the parents told me that learning the ASL vocabulary through the book provided a context to help them remember the signs.
After a month of working on Brown Bear, the families began asking me what book we would read together next! From their request, I began building monthly books into my sessions with families. I have also started a YouTube channel where the families can find the books we are working on in ASL and English and ASL and Spanish. This provides a resource for the families to practice the signs for the stories outside of our sessions.
Thank you so much for your support in helping build a love for literacy in our youngest learners!”
