When students' sensory needs are met, the are better able to focus on their academic pursuits. The materials that I have selected are research-based products that allow both student-lead and teacher-led sensory diets that can make school a more comfortable, more fun place with be for students with and without disabilities! The variety in selected materials ensures that all students who use the sensory room will be able to find several different items that meet their needs. The items include things that can be touched, seen, smelled, and heard. The layout of the room and the selection of the materials is being supported though careful research, and regular consultation with an Occupational Therapist who specializes in the development of sensory environments. With her help, I selected a bubble tube, lava lamp, liquid tubes, and a lightning ball to help meet the needs of students who prefer something visual to help regulate themselves. For students who like physical sensations, we chose water beads, a vibration tube, thinking putty, oral chew necklaces, Hedgehog rings, pea pod couch, and stress balls. These items allow a student to keep his hands or mouth busy, which often increases the ability to focus on instruction. We also selected a diffuser and essential oils for student who respond well to olfactory input, and guided mediation CD's to help the students increase the mindfulness. Being aware of what is going on in your own body is the first step in being able to regulate emotions, and, in turn, regulate behavior. The variety that we selected allows the students to find activities that best met their needs, and provides the teachers and therapists with many different tools that can be used to support our students!
