Students in higher socio-economic groups do multiple book studies in middle school and my all girls 7th grade Pre-AP students need this experience too. We want to study "The Book Thief" as part of our fiction studies. We already have class sets of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Lightning Thief" that I acquired from grass roots donations over a few years. Novel studies teach concrete study habits for high school and college. They also teach organizational and presentational skills for careers and build a foundation of shared knowledge and experience for my students. In the end, I want them to be more competitive with other students from more affluent schools.
