All students need to learn about how an ecosystem works. The easiest way is for students to learn about an ecosystem is to observe one. The bird feeder will attract a variety of birds for students to identify, observe, and note their interactions. Is one species more dominant than another? The 40 pound variety bag of seeds will provide food to attract the birds. Do birds have a seed preference? I wonder why.........statements, " I wonder why cardinals only eat certain seeds in the bird feeder?" will drive student lead questions, interests, and curiosity for students to work collaboratively to find the answers. The bird house will provide shelter for the birds during the four seasons Do birds need shelter like other animals? The mount will be used to secure the bird house. Why does the bird house need to be secured? The bird bath will allow the birds to bathe. Do birds take baths? Students will use the bird feeder, seeds, bird house, mount, and bird bath to document how birds interact in nature. Students will use nature of science to explore and develop an understanding of how science differs from other modes of acquiring information. The "bird" resources will give students "real life" experiences with discovering habitats, adaptations, and how birds play an integral part in the ecosystem.
