As a third year educator, I was able to take advantage of an opportunity to participate in restorative practices training this past summer. It was an eye-opening experience, as I grew to understand the valuable impact of implementing consistent community circles and class meetings with my learners. The power of gathering in a circle is a meaningful and intentional approach to guiding young minds towards authentic listening and comprehensive understanding.
My genuine desire for these young learners is to help them build interpersonal communication skills and empathy for others-- these are truly the skills our future generations need to possess. These are also skills that are most deeply processed through shared experiences with peers. My current rug was handed down from a previous educator and although I'm grateful, it has definitely seen better days. The rainbow rug I requested offers diverse seating options including enough space for my class of 25 to form an oval around the edges, while also providing the option for contained squares as students learn about personal space. Having a new rug as a gathering place for discussions about social interactions and maintaining emotional health will be invigorating for my learners. Thank you in advance for your consideration!
