The US Math Recovery Council has been working hard to train teachers to be more efficient, effective educators. Through this training I have been introduced to strategies and activities to better reach my students. Cuisenaire Rods will help students at all levels of fraction knowledge development. To develop a deeper understanding of fractions as numbers and measurement, Cuisenaire Rods allow students to work from the basic unit fraction understanding to the more complex task of coordinating three levels of units. Students will begin to see how one rod represents one piece of the whole. Then they will work toward finding a fractional amount, say 2/3, when given the whole. Students will continue working through the development of fraction understanding using these rods for different purposes. These rods also allow students to think outside the typical circle and rectangle fraction pieces they have been working with all through elementary school. Again, this is a great opportunity for learning not only for the students, but for the teacher as well.
