The historical fiction book, Lions of Little Rock tells a story about a young girl impacted by the school closings and challenges due to integrating schools in Little Rock in 1958. My students will be able to relate to the social challenges with friends and family that are discussed in this book. Even though it is fiction, the events surrounding the story are real and it will provide examples of the challenges between federal, state and local governments using the specific issue of segregation. I hope by using a fictional story, they will understand the federalism concepts that are part of the Civics curriculum. We will use this as the text for Friday book club during 3rd quarter where they will work on literacy skills for their English class as well.
