Supporting all students and their needs is pertinent to success in school. Being able to offer students multiple manipulatives to use in class will ensure positive outcomes. Every child is unique, with unique needs to support learning. Theraputty, sit and move cushions, tangle puzzles, body brushes, and stretchy body bands are items that I would love to incorporate into my classroom to encourage the success of all students. Throughout the school day, students will have opportunities to use tools from our “sensory space” as needed. When a child feels stressed, sad, frustrated, wiggly, or overwhelmed, he/she can visit our sensory space to find a tool that will support calming and refocusing so that the growth and learning can continue. A child could choose a sit and move cushion to sit on during a writing lesson to help focus on our goal, rather than moving around on the carpet and focusing on the need to move. Another child could take 2 minutes after recess to manipulate theraputty or body brushes to calm and refocus their energy back into the classroom and learning focus. Every child would have the opportunity to manipulate objects to help when listening to a story, practicing math strategies, writing a small moments story, or exploring a science lesson. The objects that I can purchase for my students to utilize will support many needs without causing unwanted attention or disruption to others.
