As the joy of reading continues to be suffocated for young people in our society due to what they have experienced in school or ease of information via technology; we, teachers, need to be rethinking how to build literacy in this day and age to revitalize the importance of books. My students will develop a realization of the importance of building literacy through reading books that have meaning, connect to who they are, and bring on an adventure for them. If they are assigned another novel that has no connection to their life and has a context in which they aren't familiar with, there will be minimal buy in. A love of reading comes through finding yourself amidst the pages of the book you have been sucked into, and I am pumped to start working with students to transport them there. How will this be done? They will be going through a semester long Reading Strategies course that will break down what they are capable of reading, pinpointing their reading level, setting goals for how many books they will read in that semester, and developing skills of analyzing and connecting to the stories, characters, and themes present in the books they've chosen. Instead of assigning one book for all students to teach a skill, my students will acquire those same skills through reading what they love.
