One of my main goals this year is to really increase the amount of DEAR books that scholars read throughout the year. DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) are independent self-selected reading books that scholars can dive into whenever there may be free time. We also high encourage scholars to read their DEAR books at home! If funded, this project will allow for our library to expand exponentially. Most of our scholars are labeled as economically disadvantaged by the state of Massachusetts. This means that many come from homes that live below the poverty line, are food insecure, housing insecure, or homeless. Having a robust library allows for scholars to find books that appeal to them. Due to many circumstances, scholars are rarely able to get to our city library and too often buying new books is out of the question. If funded, the books will be allowed to be checked out (using the library cards in the project) and scholars will have the opportunity to read them in and out of the classroom space. Lastly, the wobble cushions will allow for some of our wiggly learners to be able to adjust to the learning environment and self-regulate, while being able to remain in the classroom.
