We have several labs in my Environmental Science class that really needed a CO2 sensor last year. I have some anthracite coal that we can burn and measure the CO2 versus the gas we collected from the tailpipes of cars. I have algae and we add fertilizer to create our own algal bloom and it would be great to be able to measure the CO2 produced as the oxygen is used up. We also have a lab where we use biomass to create ethanol. Using the CO2 sensor allows us to measure the effectiveness of the fermentation. I am teaching Environmental Science to students who will be solving these problems in the future. Problems like the hole in the ozone and cleaning up polluted waters were solved by individuals with knowledge and dedication, and that is what I am demonstrating in my classes. There are so many other environmental problems out there waiting to be solved. My students need to know how to use equipment, how to measure and plot data, and how to use the data to come to conclusions. These are the basic tools they will be using to generate solutions and then, to follow through.
