Classroom Reading Oasis
Funded Dec 4, 2018I just wanted to start out by saying, thank you all so much for donating to my high school English classroom. We received a futon, 2 rugs and a lamp. My students were so excited to see the new additions arrive. They helped me set up and rearrange the classroom to make room for the new items. I had a few students insist that they were the ones to open the new boxes. They helped me put things together and they were so invested in the process. We placed them in the corner of my room, which creates a cozy little reading corner. I added a few other things to the corner as well, like a bookshelf that I'm hoping to fill with new books that are highly engaging for my students.
My students have been putting their group names on the calendar in order to take turns sitting in the reading corner. It is so refreshing to see students excited about coming into the classroom again. In high school, it's often difficult to spark that excitement, but the reading corner has definitely created that spark. I have my classroom set up in groups, so some of the groups like working in the reading corner. One particular moment that I would to share is regarding one particular students that I have that never reads for enjoyment. Once we set up the reading corner, this particular student was so happy to sit in the reading corner and read his new book that he checked out from the library.
The next steps for the reading corner are to include a wider variety of books for my students to enjoy and to eventually add more seating so that more students can enjoy the comfort of the reading corner. I hope to have book studies with my classes and this comfy area will allow the students to read in comfort. With this project, I hope to instill the love of reading with more of my students. Thank you all again so much! This is such a wonderful addition to my classroom and I'm so excited that you graciously donated to my project. Thank you all again!!!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Graifer
