I serve a population of the most at-risk students in the school. Most deal with some form of mental illness and struggle to maintain socially appropriate behavior. They deal with adverse situations including but not limited to emotional, behavioral, and academic problems. As these students learn to manage their behavior, there is a need for material incentives like bags of Cheetos. I am using a point system where students can earn points for appropriate behavior and then turn them in for material incentives, like a can of Sprite, Mountain Dew or Gatorade. Often, I need to reinforce behavior on an hourly basis so a mini Snickers can be the thing that gets them through the class. Some need daily reinforcement; others can use their points weekly. As appropriate behavior increases, they can bank their points and get better things.
