Science Materials for the Self Contained!
Funded Sep 28, 2024Thank you so much for helping provide my students with new science materials specifically for their self-contained classroom. When the students saw the items, particularly the lab coats, the excitement was almost palpable; they couldn't wait to try them on. Immediately after, they relentlessly asked their teachers when they would be doing their first science lab. It's always a beautiful moment when students are excited to learn, but it is particularly special when such enthusiasm comes from students who aren't always enthusiastic about school due to their respective barriers. I am thankful that they have this newfound confidence and I hope they will grow to learn their science content class more than before!”

The Maze Runner - Class Set
Funded Mar 21, 2024Thank you so much with funding my project! After several years of teaching summer rising with paper copies of The Maze Runner, I am absolutely ecstatic to be able to provide students with brand new physical copies of the book. I believe that having a physical copy of any book helps illicit the human senses for a complete submersion into the world created by all authors; not to mention the positive impact limiting paper copies has on the environment! I cannot wait to jump into the dystopian world of The Maze Runner once again with my summer rising students!”

Library Update!
Funded Mar 22, 2024Thanks to your donations, I was able to update the library for my self-contained classroom. I began this work in early September by first renovating the library and categorizing books into Lexile levels. This helped my students select books that were within their range and provided me the opportunity to teach them how to select developmentally appropriate books on their own, without teacher help. Next, I was able to get a first shipment of books funded by Donor's Choose in the fall which helped me create a separate section of books: books categorized by genres. At this point, students were given the option to independently select books from either respective category. For this most recent project, I recognized the need for updated books that reflected not only student interest, but a diverse cast of characters. I intend to continue to update the library for this class with the hopes of fostering a love for reading with every student that enters. Thank you again!”

Fantasy & Adventure Books!
Funded Oct 27, 2023Our students in the self-contained classroom were more than ecstatic when their new shipment of books arrived. They were noticing the small changes we were making to our classroom library, but adding brand new books, of their interest and with characters who look and sound like them, was the highlight of this project.
Though almost all students in the class struggle to read, their interest was immediate. In using their reading pens, students are able to engage in independent reading time in the hopes that it activates their imagination and increases their literacy skills. Thank you for allowing this opportunity for a population of students who can, sometimes, be forgotten.”

Funded Jul 13, 2023Thank you so much for helping us fill our library with accessible books for our self-contained classroom. Many of the students in the class have immense struggles with literacy skills as well as expressive and receptive language. Additionally, students were not excited to select books that were worn and torn as well as outdated and old. Now, students have brand new books that are modern, display a diverse cast that they can relate to, and come from a wide range of lexile ranges. It is exciting, as a teacher and an avid reader, to see children so excited about books. Thank you again!”

Funded Nov 18, 2022Thank you so much for funding this project. The students are absolutely overjoyed to be able to tap into their creative side. Many of our students join Anime Club not only to stay up to date with current Anime but to explore how Anime is created. Of course, like many movies, Anime originates from the main source: Manga. This is where a story visually comes to life for our students. Unlike classic literature, Mangas help our students envision the world and the journey they will be embarking on. Thanks to your help, our students will begin learning how to create and craft their own world and journey!”

Funded Sep 21, 2018My students were beyond excited to learn that they would be able to attend Anime NYC 2018. For a lot of them, primarily the 8th and 9th graders, this was a dream come true for them. To prepare for the trip, students spent a lot of time on laptops researching their cosplays. This was something that many of them have always wanted to do but had never had the opportunity before. We also hosted a total of three bake sales and paired up with Student Council to hold other fundraisers like Movie Night. This allowed the club to raise more money and provide additional support to members who's family could not afford to buy them a cosplay. It was beautiful to see such compassion and collaboration from my students during this preparation process.
The biggest high light of the trip for my students was meeting other cosplayers. They had no idea how much people participated in this event let alone how many people actually cosplayed without any shame or embarrassment. Some of my shy students even broke out of their comfort shell to ask cosplayers how they made their cosplays and many of my students took pictures with cosplayers. Towards the end, my students were inspired to create better cosplays for the following year.
This trip inspired my students to want to learn more about anime and manga. A lot of them were interested in going to panels to meet creators. Some of my students also expressed interest in wanting to become manga writers and others expressed interest in wanting to become anime art designers. This conversation led to a discussion around college and future career goals. My students are fired up to do what it takes to immerse themselves in the anime world as avid enthusiasts but also as future professionals!”
