I teach English Language Arts to at-risk high school students. Each year, I am devastated by the choices students make that negatively impact their life outcomes: dropping out of school, involvement in gangs, financial security through selling drugs. Our other 11th grade ELA teacher and I would like to create a unit around the book The Other Wes Moore. So we are requesting 60 copies for our classes. This book is the true story of two people with similarly challenging life circumstances but entirely different outcomes due to choices that they made. After reading and discussing this book as a class, we will take a look at how people have agency in their life outcomes. Students will reflect on their own choices they have made in life and how those are reflected in their current situations and opportunities. We think this book will be very impactful on our students through the reading and class discussions. Our hope is that the book will force students to evaluate their own life choices. Additionally, we feel that students will be interested in this book, which is a challenge with the other texts we are required to teach. We think that students will want to read this book, which will improve their reading and critical thinking skills.
